"Does it spark joy?"

Marie Kondo’s book has sold over 5 million copies worldwide. And her new show on Netflix, “Tidying Up with Marie Kondo” is drumming up a lot of enthusiasm for decluttering. Homes visited by the organising expert have benefitted greatly from the Marie Kondo tips.

5 Marie Kondo tips to tidy up the KonMari way

Marie Kondo first came into the spotlight when her bestselling book “The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up: The Japanese Art of Decluttering and Organizing” was published. It’s been translated into several languages and changed the way many think about decluttering!

The impact of her method is clear since her Netflix series launched. Each episode follows her travel across the US giving Marie Kondo tips.

The opening of the show sees the lovely Marie share with her captive audience, “My mission is to spark joy in the world through tidying.”

Her tidying philosophy can be summed up in these 6 points, in order.

1. Commit to tidying up

Once you get stuck in, there’s no going turning back. Fully commit to the task by getting stuck in. If you’re planning to reorganise your wardrobe, then take all the clothes out and stack them in a pile! The messier it is, the easier it is to sift through what to keep and what to throw.

2. Imagine your ideal lifestyle.

Tidying up shouldn’t be a mindless task! In fact, you should envision what your ideal lifestyle looks like. This is the goal behind why you are tidying up. Not only are you clearing unwanted items, but also keeping things that allow you to live the way you want!

3. Tidy by category, not by location.

We all fall into the habit of clearing things by the location. However, this might be the most innovative insight out of Marie Kondo tips! Instead of focusing on the area (e.g. bedroom or living room), tidy according to these categories in order:

  1. Clothes
  2. Books
  3. Paper
  4. Miscellaneous things
  5. Items with sentimental value

If you need to, then separate a category into subcategories. For example. clothes can be broken down into tops, shirts, sweaters, trousers, etc.

4. Completely discard unwanted items

As you go through your mountain of mess, began setting aside items that you do not want. Marie advises to give away or throw things that you don’t need. Furthermore, you should start by discarding before you even think about organising anything! You may be asking yourself “how do I know what to keep and what to throw?” Well, the most interesting of Marie Kondo tips is…

5. Ask yourself, “Does it spark joy?”

With each item you pick up, ask yourself this question, “does it spark joy?” If the answer is no, then it needs to go! At first, it can be difficult letting things go. But the goal is choosing what to keep, not what to throw. As you continue to sort your items, you will find joy in the things you have as they align with your lifestyle. The quirky question might not cause much reaction. In that case, replace joy with similar words and phrases such as “thrill of pleasure”, “speaks to your heart”, and “love”.
