Why decorating early can make the holidays merrier

Here's one way to make Christmas merrier.

Preparing for the holidays is a pretty joyful time. For some, it starts once you sit down to write your Christmas shopping list or plan a trip back home. For others, heralding the holidays begins with decorating their space all while blasting holiday music to make it even more festive. But did you know that you can actually be even merrier before the holidays? It turns out putting up Christmas decorations in November or earlier can make you happier, according to experts.

Putting up Christmas Decorations in November or Even Earlier Can Make You Happier

Growing up in the Philippines where Christmas pretty much starts in September, there’s nothing strange to me about putting up the lights and tree months early. Going to the malls means hearing Christmas music playing; sales happen pretty much consistently throughout the months leading up to the holidays.

Being so excited for the holidays isn’t going overboard. In fact, some believe it should be encouraged.

“In a world full of stress and anxiety, people like to associate to things that make them happy and Christmas decorations evoke those strong feelings of the childhood,” explains Steve McKeown, a psychoanalyst, to Unilad.

He goes on to explain how “decorations are simply an anchor or pathway to those old childhood magical emotions of excitement.”

So putting up Christmas decorations in November or earlier “extends the excitement.”

Because decorating for Christmas evokes nostalgia, it helps people feel more connected to the past and to their identity.

And it’s not just a warm feeling that only nostalgia can bring that we can count as a benefit of putting up Christmas decorations in November or earlier. Decorating early can also help you make new friends.

Putting up decorations outside of your house can make your home seem like a more welcoming place. And it communicates to your neighbours that you are friendly.

No matter when you decide to put up that tree, or dust off those ornaments, we could all use a little joy in our lives. And let’s face it: christmas decorations truly liven up a room.
