Folding clothes 101

There are various different ways to fold clothes and laundry. But ultimately when you fold and store them away promptly, they all yield the same practical results:

  • fewer wrinkles especially when you fold them immediately,
  • the clothes tend to fit better in drawers, in closets, even in your luggage while looking neat and organised,
  • it also makes searching for clothes a lot easier.

A good tip to make folding clothes more bearable is a clutter-free flat surface. Preferably one that doesn't require you to bend over so as not to make this chore any more back breaking. A big table would be great because you would be able to sit down. Otherwise, your bed is another great option and if your floor is clean, that would suffice too. Aside from that, there are many different ways to fold clothes, but let's start with the basics!

  2. Push back the insides of the pockets and make sure they are neatly flat.
  3. Hold your pants vertically by the waist and fold along the centre seams.
  4. Make sure the back pockets are outside and the legs are aligned.

  1. Be it buttons, zips or even flaps, make sure they are all closed and fastened.
  2. Then flatten the shirt facing down.
  3. Use the distance from the collar to the start of the sleeves as a guideline, then fold to the back, one sleeve together with one-third of the shirt. Smooth and flatten everything out.
  4. Fold back the sleeve so that it is vertical with the shirt.
  5. Then repeat steps 3 and 4 on the other side with the other sleeve.
  6. Fold the bottom of the shirt all the way to the collar in half or in thirds depending on your preference.
  7. Finish by flipping the whole shirt over to the front.

  1. Folding a T-shirt is similar to folding a collared shirt minus the buttons. Just like before, turn the shirt facing down and smooth out any creases. A good tip is to gently tug the sides until they are aligned if they have gone out of shape in the washing machine.
  2. Use the distance from the collar to the start of the sleeves as a guideline. Fold to the back, one sleeve together with one-third of the shirt. Smooth and flatten everything out.
  3. Fold back the sleeve (if any) so that it is vertical with the shirt.
  4. Then repeat steps 3 and 4 on the other side.
  5. Fold the bottom of the shirt all the way to the collar in half or in thirds depending on your preference.
  6. Finish by flipping the whole shirt over to the front.

Folding underwear

  1. Start by turning the underwear or panties face side down. The reason for this, especially for men's underwear, is so that the brand name can be seen. This makes it easier to distinguish between owners for big families who are staying together.
  2. Fold one-third of one side to the back and repeat the same with the other side. Both ends should overlap each other leaving a single strip.
  3. Then pick up the bottom part of the underwear and fold upwards two-thirds of the way.
  4. Fold where it meets the waist and tuck the remainder in. You should end up with a small mini square with a ribbon or underwear brand tag in front.

Folding socks

  1. Start by making sure the socks are flat before placing them into a T as shown in the picture above.
  2. Fold one side to the middle.
  3. Do the same with the other end. Both sides should overlap and look like they are wrapped around the sock that is aligned vertically.
  4. Then fold the top part down and tuck the bottom into the opening there.

Folding towels

  1. Lay the towel onto a flat surface and smooth out the creases.
  2. Depending on the size of your towels you can either choose to fold them in half and do this 3 times until it forms a rectangle.
  3. Or you can also fold them one-third of the way, then repeat the same fold lengthwise towards the middle.
  4. If you are going to hang them on the towel rack, then fold it in half and then half again until it resembles a long rectangle. Hang the towels on the towel rail neatly.

However, there are different ways to fold clothes and clean laundry. At the end of the day, it all rolls down to preference. Some may prefer to hang their pants, dresses and long skirts to reduce creases. Or roll clothes, towels, underwear and socks into tight balls to save space. The size of your closet and luggage is the biggest deciding factor.

When travelling light, you can make it better by rolling all your clothes because that is the most space-saving solution. So whether it is folding, rolling or hanging, these are just some of the basic 101s and different ways to fold clothes. By applying the same folding methods, there is uniformity. This will then allow clothes to be stored in an organised way.
