As much as everyone hates to do the dishes, this is the one chore that is actually quite unavoidable. While life might be a tad easier if you have a dishwasher at home, these hand washing dishes tips are a lifesaver. Besides, even if you did have a dishwasher at home, that doesn't mean every item is actually dishwasher safe.
There are actually a lot of things you shouldn’t put into a dishwasher, like crystals, cast iron pots, non-stick pots and pans, good knives, as well as wooden cooking utensils.

Step 1: Put on some gloves
Putting on gloves actually protects your hand from strong detergents that can really dry out your skin. Even though latex gloves are not much of an insulator, it also acts as a barrier when using hot water to clean.
We get that not everyone like using gloves when doing chores, but they do offer extra grip when it comes to slippery, wet dishes. Having them on also means fewer chances of you hurting yourself if say there’s a knife hiding under those soapy suds that you forgot about.
But if you must do without them, be sure to choose a detergent that is gentle on the skin. And if it is the strong rubber smell that you just cannot stand, try sprinkling some baking soda on the inside to mask the smell.
Step 2: Have an empty dish rack ready
Store away all your dried dishes from the night before too so that you have an empty dish rack ready to go. It doesn’t make any sense to have them all wet again and there won’t be any space for your next batch of dishes. A nice big dish rack is actually much better, but if you have a medium sized one already, you can make that work too.
Step 3: Clean off the excess food on your dishes right away
Just imagine how much harder it would be to wash off food that has been left on the dishes overnight. Not only will they smell bad, but scrubbing will also require some elbow grease.
When dirty dishes are left to dry out, the food would start to create a solid bond with the surface making it so much harder to clean.
Tip all the dry excess food into the garbage bin, then with either just water or even a washcloth, clean off whatever that is left. Whenever possible, try to do the dishes immediately.
Step 4: Use hot water and soak the dishes
Use the hottest water you can bear because heat makes the food and stains break away from surfaces more easily. Not only does it help to break down grease and gunk, rinsing with hot water also ensures your glasses and cutlery dry without any spots or streaks.
To minimize the need for scrubbing, fill the sink with hot water and add in a few drops of dish liquid detergent. Let the dishes soak for a while or overnight before washing for really stubborn stains like burnt or caramelised hardened food bits on your pots and pans.
They should loosen overnight so that you can easily wipe everything away. If there are still some minuscule stubborn bits left, you can always try sprinkling in some baking soda for a little extra mild abrasion.
Step 5: Wash the dishes with liquid soap and a sponge
When choosing a sponge, try to get good ones that are non-scratching. This is one of the hand washing dishes tips you shouldn't ignore if you don't want to ruin your dishes.
Dishwands are also great because you can put the dishwashing liquid directly into the handle. Have on hand several dishwashing brushes to help you get into those nooks and crannies. But for really tough stains, you might need metal sponges and steel wool to get the job done.
If you have been using liquid dishwashing detergents directly onto your dishes then you’re wasting money. You only really need one or two squirts to create enough soap to wash all your dishes.
Step 6: Start with the least greasy
This is really important when it comes to hand washing dishes tips. So start with your cups first. This is then followed by your cutlery, the plates, bowls, and ending with the pots and pans. You may have to drain and refill the water as needed. Do this especially if the water is really gross and grimy. Some might prefer to drain the entire sink before starting on the dishes.
Finish with either rinsing in hot or cold water, checking that there are no soap residue or stains left. Then transfer and line them up neatly on the dishrack so that they can dry.
