Popularly known as a dessert ingredient in the English classic, rhubarb and custard, you’d be forgiven for thinking it’s a fruit from taste alone. However, it has roots, leaves and a stalk which makes it a vegetable!

The ubiquitous tomato is a common topic in the “vegetables that are fruits” forum. If you’ve ever had a debate on whether a tomato is a fruit or a vegetable, you likely left the conversation none the wiser. After all, they don’t taste particularly sweet.

Since they contain seeds, tomatoes are technically a fruit. But in America, they’ve been classified as a vegetable as well!

Green beans are featured in all culinary settings as a quintessential vegetable side dish. But of all the vegetables that are fruits, this is the most surprising. Since fruits contain seeds, green beans are pods that contain seeds inside of them. Which basically makes it a fruit!

Watermelons have divided opinion in recent years. The deliciously sweet fruit contains seeds, which is a trademark sign of being a fruit. Yet it is grown using vegetable production systems.

In Oklahoma, United States, it has been designated as the state vegetable. The jury is still out, but everyone agrees it’s yummy!

 

6. Eggplants

Also known as aubergines and is one of the vegetables that are fruits. The tiny and edible seeds mean it’s a fruit. It’s actually classified as a berry by botanists!

 

7. Okra

Another example from the list of vegetables that are fruits! Okra is popular in Caribbean and Asian cuisines. The plants’ pods contain seeds, which means it’s a fruit!
